Probiotics

Probiotics in a bottle:

A) Recommended by Karen Vaughan, L.Ac., Registered Herbalist (AHG)
"Good brands include Pharmax, Floradix, Threelac, DDS, Neoflora and other brands kept refrigerated in the health food store. Use them rapidly, as they die off in the jar, but vary brands. You need more than just acidophilus. Make liberal use of live probiotic foods like yogurt, miso, blue cheese, natto, sauerkraut, olives (not canned!), kefir, pickles, and non-yeast fermentable foods... And don’t forget the prebiotic foods (see below)..."

C) Per Emily G.
"Have you seen Pharmax's Mindlinx? It has human strains that degrade gluten and casein peptides and colonizes? JaneS on MDC used it with her son, following a bottle of their Intensive to "prepare the bed" so to speak. Her son could previously not even tolerate ghee and is doing good with A2 milk now. It also has glutamine in it."

D) CustomProbiotics.com. Very expensive but potent probiotics. Interesting product for ingredient sensitive people:
D-Lactate free probiotic formulation, most specific for autistic children. It consists of L. Salivarius, L. Rhamnosus, B. Bifidum and B. Infantis at 250 billion cfu's/gram. Price: $165 per 100 gram; $100 per 50 gram.

E) OTHER
  • Ohirra's has a special delivery system. Thought: there are different strains which are best for different parts such as some that are protective in the mouth, some in small intestine, some in colon. Delivering priobiotics past the stomach may be helpful if you are trying to get it into the gut, but this will not help you with oral probiota.

Miso, kefir, kombucha, yogurt, buttermilk, olives, blue cheese, sauerkraut, live pickles and kimchee are full of probiotics that can all help reinforce your gut flora.

Prebiotics:

Eat some of this every day! Prebiotics feed your gut bacteria but cannot be fermented by yeasts!

beta glucans in oatmeal

Inulin or fructoligosaccharides (FOS) in:

Jerusalem artichokes
onions

garlic

I've seen FOS added to many foods such as:
cultured dairy products

Oral Biofilms

I just read in an article from Garden of Life re: their cleanse program that S. Salivarus helps keep [microorganisms that produce toxins in the mouth] from setting up camp in the oral cavity. Bacillus coagulans provides support for the gastrointestinal tract... works to reduce toxic load by inhibiting potentially toxic microorganisms from traveling further in the body..

So, I was really interested in S. Salivarus, since I feel that the biofilms theory explains the change in my oral health. Bad stuff has set up camp in my mouth (and sinuses).

So, interesting to see S. Salivarus in this product (but $87 a bottle!!!):

Here's what I do for oral health:

  • Put toothbrush and plastic tongue scraper (bought at Target) into a little jar (spice jar works well) with hydrogen peroxide. Change the peroxide about once a week. Every member of the family has their own little jar.
  • Floss before bed. Brush in a.m. and before bed. Scrape after brushing.
  • Swish with probiotic after brushing.
  • I am going to check out Biotene's PBF mouthwash...
  • Will be on the lookout for a swishable probiotic that contains S. Salivarus. In the meantime, I'm not sure that chewing up the tablet of Primal Defense, which contains S. Salivarus, does as good a job as the So Delicious Coconut Kefir (you could use homemade kefir also)
  • Consider having amalgams removed http://www.iaomt.org/patients/index.asp
